Tamil Nadu government’s shocking reply about The Kerala story ban in cinemas

Sudipto Sen’s latest film, The Kerala Story, has been in the headlines for many reasons since its worldwide release. There are some states like Kerala, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu which have banned the movie in the theaters. The film’s team approached the court to ask the screening of the movie in theaters as it was passed by the censor team. After this, in West Bengal, the ban on the movie was lifted and bookings were opened.

However, the Tamil Nadu government’s reply to court on this issue was shocking as they said they have not banned the movie. The theater owners voluntarily removed the movie due to the poor response of the audience for the movie according to them The Tamil Nadu government replied to the court that it has not issued any order imposing a “shadow or implicit ban” on ‘The Kerala Story’, a multilingual film released on May 5.

The government said that despite the state providing the required security to theaters and multiplexes, their owners decided to stop exhibiting the film from May 7 because of a lack of avid response from the audience. In its reply to the petition filed by the makers of the film alleging a de-facto ban in the state, the state government, said amidst dissent and protests, the movie was released in 19 multiplexes throughout Tamil Nadu on May 5.

However, due to the lack of response from the common audience, theater and multiplex owners of the state decided to stop exhibiting the film from May 7,” it said, adding the content of the petition citing that the state has imposed a “shadow or implicit ban” on the film is misleading and unsupported, and is intensely denied.
