The RRR Oscar campaign has been a perfect case study for many on how to market your film and at the same time has attracted several controversies. Director Tammareddy Bhardwaj had made sensational statements on the need to spend such an amount on Oscar campaigns. Meanwhile, RRR producer DVV Danayya also stated that nobody contacted him before the Oscars.
Despite such statements and hurdles, the RRR Oscar campaign was a successful one. MM Keeravani and Chandrabose won the Oscar for Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu. There have been reports that the unit spent a whopping Rs 80 crores for the Oscar campaign which has been rubbished by SS Karthikeya.
In an interview, Karthikeya revealed that the unit spend Rs 8.5 crores for the entire campaign. “We started with the projection of Rs 5 crore for the campaign which itself was a bit high for us. We divided the campaign into three phases and once we received the nomination, we ramped up the campaign with more screenings which is where we ended up spending more than anticipated.”
He further added that compared to other films which had the backing of big studios, RRR had none and the money was spent from the teams’ own pockets.
