Sudheer Babu is making a comeback a comeback to the big screen after almost 3 years with Sridevi Soda Center. His last release ‘V’ co-starring Nani was an OTT release and failed to impress the audience. Sudheer has now collaborated with Karuna Kumar who received great accolades for his film Palasa 1978. Has the director succeeded in recreating the magic, has Sudheer Babu scored the much elusive hit? Let’s find out
Story: From the outset, Sridevi Soda Center appears to be a regular love story set in a village. Lighting Suribabu (Sudheer Babu) and Sridevi (Aanandhi) fall in love but face the same old problems that lovers face. Sridevi’s father Naresh, who owns a Soda Center outright opposes to this relationship. The caste equation comes into play and the relationship is opposed. However, that is where the film takes a turn from the regular plot and develops an interesting sub-plot. The track featuring Sudheer Babu as a murder accused provides some well-choreographed action sequences and emotional sequences.
Performance: Sudheer Babu has gone for a complete rustic look for the film and fits the role well. Anandhi looks lovely on the screen and performs adequately in the emotional scenes. She is definitely an actress to watch out for in the coming days. Satyam Rajesh and Naresh are typecast yet again in roles that they have been doing for quite a while. Pavel Navageethan is terrific as the antagonist and his body language and mannerisms truly exude ruthlessness. The Tamil actor has is not just a regular baddie and has a great role in the film and performs very well.
Analysis: Sridevi Soda Center is a love story laced with caste conflicts. The subject is not a new one and has existed in our cinemas for ages. However, its the treatment of subject and screenplay and shocking twists that make the film a watchable experience. While the movie lags in the beginning, it picks up the pace towards interval. The runtime of 2 and half hours could have been trimmed for making the film crispier. Mani Sharma’s BGM perfect aids the proceedings of the film and is one of its biggest assets.
Plus Points:
Climax Twist
Mani Sharma BGM
Action episodes
Pavel Navageethan’s performance as villain
Minus Points:
Slow narration in 1st half
Runtime
Verdict: While Sridevi Soda Center at first appears as a run of a mill story, the sub-plots, twists and challenges thrown in front of the Lighting Suribabu make it an interesting watch. The village rivalries and boat races are well captured and provide viewers with a great visual experience. The predictability of the film is one of the drawbacks but is well covered by the performance of the entire cast. Director Karuna Kumar has truly arrived on the big scene.
