According to reports, Rashmika is being considered to play legendary Carnatic vocalist M.S. Subbulakshmi in a proposed biographical film. The project is reportedly being developed by filmmaker Gowtam Tinnanuri, known for the National Award-winning sports drama Jersey, who has been researching the life of the iconic singer. The biopic is said to be produced by Allu Aravind, Bunny Vas, and Rockline Venkatesh.
M.S. Subbulakshmi (1916-2004) was India’s first musician to receive the Bharat Ratna and remains one of the most celebrated Carnatic vocalists in history. She was also the first Indian to perform at the United Nations General Assembly in 1966. Portraying a cultural icon of Subbulakshmi’s stature would demand a completely different performance from Rashmika, requiring her to capture not just the musical genius but also the grace and cultural significance of the legendary singer.
Reports about this biopic first surfaced in June, when Sai Pallavi was initially considered for the role. The recent updates suggest Rashmika has now emerged as the frontrunner, with look tests reportedly conducted. However, the casting is yet to be officially announced, with speculation that an official announcement might come on September 16, which marks M.S. Subbulakshmi’s birth anniversary.
