Fresh off the blockbuster success of the Dhurandhar franchise, Ranveer Singh has officially begun shooting for his next major project, Pralay. The ambitious film has gone on floors in Mumbai, with the makers opting for live locations across the city and its surroundings.
Kalyani Priyadarshan’s Hindi Cinema Debut
Directed by Jai Mehta, who previously co-directed Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story and helmed Lootere, the project marks his feature-film directorial debut. Kalyani Priyadarshan, who rose to national prominence with Lokah Chapter One: Chandra, plays a pivotal role, marking her entry into Hindi cinema. The film is produced by Ananya Birla’s Birla Studios, True Story Films and Ranveer Singh’s Maa Kasam Films, with Singh also serving as a producer.
₹300 Crore Zombie Apocalypse Thriller
Pralay is being mounted as a large-scale end-of-the-world survival action thriller, set against a dystopian backdrop where humanity faces an unprecedented catastrophe. Earlier reports have described the film as a zombie apocalypse thriller, with the story revolving around survival, societal collapse and the fight to preserve humanity.
However, the makers have not revealed the complete plot, and producer Hansal Mehta has clarified that the film is not an adaptation of José Saramago’s Blindness). The project is reportedly being made on a massive budget of around ₹300 crore, with extensive visual-effects work and international technicians involved in creating its post-apocalyptic world.
Ranveer’s Post-Dhurandhar Shift
For Ranveer Singh, Pralay arrives at a particularly interesting point in his career. After the scale and commercial success of Dhurandhar, the actor is now attempting something radically different with a survival spectacle that demands a physically and emotionally intense performance. The casting of Kalyani Priyadarshan adds another major attraction, especially after her success in Lokah.
With filming now underway and Mumbai being transformed into the film’s dystopian setting, Pralay is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious theatrical projects currently in production. The makers are yet to announce an official release date, but expectations are already high around this unusual Ranveer Singh–Jai Mehta collaboration.
