Ram Charan’s Peddi: Why It Failed at Overseas Box Office

Ram Charan’s sports drama Peddi is all set to conclude its theatrical run soon. Opening to mixed-to-positive reviews, the film performed well at the domestic box office and has already achieved break-even status in most territories. However, the Buchi Babu Sana directorial failed to strike a chord with non-Telugu audiences and ended up as a loss-making venture in the Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada markets. Yet, the most surprising aspect of Peddi‘s theatrical run has been its underperformance in North America, traditionally one of the strongest territories for Telugu cinema.

Peddi’s Genre Mismatch with Overseas Preferences

While factors such as high acquisition costs, release postponements, and the impact of Game Changer have been widely discussed, the primary reason behind Peddi‘s overseas disappointment appears to be its limited appeal to the target audience. In recent years, overseas Telugu moviegoers have shown a clear preference for whistle-worthy mass action entertainers and event films. In contrast, Peddi is a sports drama rooted in rural culture, with emotional storytelling taking precedence over larger-than-life action sequences.

The film opened strongly thanks to Ram Charan’s popularity, but sustaining momentum proved difficult once the initial excitement faded. As word-of-mouth spread, the film struggled to attract repeat audiences and moviegoers beyond its core Telugu fan base.

Limited Star Power Beyond Ram Charan

Another factor that worked against Peddi was the relative lack of established names behind the project. Director Buchi Babu Sana entered the film with just one movie to his credit, making Peddi only his second directorial venture. The production house backing the film is still relatively new and lacks the market presence and credibility enjoyed by established banners such as Mythri Movie Makers.

As a result, the film relied heavily on Ram Charan’s star power to drive advance bookings and initial footfalls. Once the opening weekend was over, there was little else to sustain the film’s momentum in overseas markets.

With its theatrical run nearing an end, trade experts predict cumulative overseas losses of around ₹18 crore ($1.9 million). Peddi is already being cited as one of the biggest underperformers for a Telugu film at the North American box office in recent times. The key question now is whether the producer will step in to compensate distributors for the losses. Regardless, the A. R. Rahman musical is expected to make its digital premiere on Netflix very soon.
