PSPK’s Box Office Struggles Continue After Comeback

PSPK's poor run at the box-office continues.
PSPK's poor run at the box-office continues.

PSPK’s (Pawan Kalyan) return to cinema after his political foray has been far from smooth. The Power Star, who stepped away from films to focus on Andhra Pradesh politics, returned to the big screen with massive fan expectations following electoral setbacks. Over the past five years, his box office track record has been marked by inconsistency and underwhelming results that stand in stark contrast to his pre-politics dominance.

PSPK’s Mixed Box Office Track Record

The actor’s comeback phase has delivered mixed results at best. His initial re-entry showed promise with Vakeel Saab (2021), a courtroom drama remake that delivered decent returns and emerged as the most successful film of his recent run. The film marked PSPK’s return after three years away from cinema and generated positive reception from audiences.

However, the momentum proved short-lived. Hari Hara Veera Mallu, a period action film, turned out to be a box-office bomb despite high production values. OG (2025), while becoming the highest grosser of his career with ₹168.5 Cr worldwide theatrical share, failed to sustain its strong opening run and didn’t achieve clean “Hit” status for distributors. The latest release, Ustaad Bhagat Singh, has only added to the setbacks.

Notably, none of PSPK’s recent films have delivered the blockbuster returns distributors hoped for, despite strong fan anticipation for each release.

Balancing Politics and Cinema

Currently serving as Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Pawan Kalyan has limited time for film commitments. He has two films in the pipeline — OG2 and PSPK32, the latter directed by Surender Reddy. Both projects are in pre-production stages, with timelines dependent on his political schedule.

The dual responsibility has created challenges in maintaining consistent screen presence and promotional engagement — factors that significantly impact box office performance in today’s market. With mounting pressure to deliver a clean hit and restore box office credibility, PSPK faces a crucial phase where strategic project selection could determine his cinematic future.
