South Indian movies are increasingly getting more traction in the North, previously the biggest South Indian movies used to collect around 200-300 crores in gross income. However, the pan India phenomenon brought by Rajamouli with his magnificent Bahubali led to the market expansion and erasure of language borders.
Pan-Indian market has been established, and the path has been taken by many South Indian movies. As of now, there are 9 movies that have crossed 400 crores gross.
- 1. Baahubali
- 2. Baahubali2
- 3. 2 PointO
- 4. Saaho
- 5. RRR
- 6. KGF2
- 7. Vikram
- 8. Ponniyin Selvan
- 9. Kantara
If we look at the list it consists the path breaker of South Indian Cinema, the Bahubali series, Shankar and Rajini’s 2 point O, Prabhas’s Saaho, Rajamouli’s RRR, Prashanth Neel and Yash’s KGF 2, Kamal Haasan and Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Vikram, Mani Ratnam’s dream project Ponniyin Selvan and the latest pan India sensation Kantara are among the 400 crore movies of South so far.
This year we have already seen 5 movies of South getting more than 400 crores gross. At the same time, the Bollywood movies are struggling to reach 200 crores mark.
Prabhas is leading in the list of these movies with 3 films already. All of his movies since Bahubali 1 except Radheshyaam have made into the list, which shows that he is a pan India superstar.
His next movies in the line-up are equally promising, Adipurush would be a delight in North India, especially and sky is the limit for the movie if it’s made well. Project K, a sci-fi thriller, is also under production in a massive scale under the direction of Nag Ashwin.
Hope more South Indian films make their mark across the nation with rooted stories and characters and bring the much-needed diversity in Indian cinema.
