Tamil Industry’s most prestigious movie Ponniyin Selvan Part 1 which has been touted as the dream project of the legendary director Maniratnam achieved blockbuster status at the box office. But except for Tamil, the collections of this movie in other languages aren’t great. Depending on the business of the film in other languages, it was required to get some more collections, but it is already close to two weeks after the release and nearing the end of the run in other languages.
Ponniyin Selvan movie has smashed all the previous records at the Tamil Nadu box office and became an industry hit. It is reported that the overseas collections have reached more than 160 crores. But trade sources say that this movie’s major collections came from only Tamil.
Being a Pan-Indian project, everyone expected the movie to get good numbers in other languages, however, the movie failed to reach those expectations. Once there was a good market for both Vikram Karthi and Telugu. Also, Aishwarya Rai and Trisha are not unknown to Telugu people. Since it is Mani Ratnam’s film, all thought that it would be a big success in Telugu. But Ponniyin Selvan didn’t get the required buzz before and after the release.
Bahubali and KGF became successful films in every language. The box office numbers of Bahubali are never before for any South Indian film, it has stunned entire India. KGF1 also did a decent range of business in Telugu, Hindi, and Tamil languages. With the help of the craze from the first parts, Bahubali2 and KGF2 became the top blockbusters of Indian cinema.
Ponniyin Selvan being a franchise movie evolved into a huge success in the Tamil language. But in other languages, it failed to create the same kind of impact. In other languages, the movie has received mixed talk and that’s why collections were not up to the mark. Now we have to wait and see how the sequel of Ponniyin Selvan does business in other languages.
