With the second wave of Covid haunting both industry as well as the common cinema-goers, the moviemakers are now in a dilemma. The pandemic has already delayed a lot of shootings as well as releases. In such as situation going ahead with the direct theatrical release is not a possibility leaving OTTs as the only option for release. The OTTs are also offering fancy amounts to the filmmakers for direct releases.
Even during the first wave of pandemic last year, Tollywood didn’t not fancy OTT releases as much as other industries did. While Suriya released his Soorarai Pottru directly on Amazon Prime, so did Mohan Lal with his Drishyam 2 earlier this year.
In contrast, none of the Tollywood A-listers did a direct OTT release of their movies. This might change this year with OTTs stepping in and offering fancy deals to the movie makers. Already there are talks of Venkatesh releasing Drushyam 2 directly OTT, however, producer Suresh Babu has not confirmed anything.
The digital platforms have also come in as a great blessing for smaller films. With a large number of people staying home, these smaller films are now able to attract more people than they would have in theatres. Case in point being movies like Bhanumathi Ramakrishna, Krishna and His Leela, etc. which became quite popular after their release directly on Aha last year.
