Dubbed ‘King Khan’, Shah Rukh Khan is regarded as one of the most popular actors in the history of Indian cinema. He is also one of the few Bollywood actors with significant fame and a large fanbase in South Indian states. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), a cult classic film in Hindi, has been dubbed into Telugu and Tamil since the 1990s and has been fairly popular among audiences.
Khan’s recent releases, Pathaan and Jawan, in their Telugu and Tamil-dubbed versions, have emerged as successful ventures at the box office. However, his most recent release, Dunki (2023), has had a release only in the original version, Hindi; this was a major disappointment for all the non-Hindi fans. In an era where cinema has become global, most of the films, no matter how small, are being dubbed into all the major Indian languages of the country. ‘King’ Khan, on the other hand, seems to be negligible about the south market.
Coping up from this dismay, fans have been eagerly waiting for the digital release of Dunki on Netflix. The film has finally arrived on the streaming platform, but only in Hindi and with no dubbed versions. This received severe backlash from not just fans but also cinephiles in general. It remains to be seen how Netflix will address this issue.
