Mrunal Thakur’s Bollywood film opts for a direct OTT release

Mrunal Thakur’s Bollywood film opts for a direct OTT release. The Sita Ramam actress is awaiting her upcoming film in Telugu, Hi Nanna, starring Nani as the lead. The latest news from Bollywood Town is that Mrunal Thakur’s forthcoming Bollywood film opts for a direct OTT release. The film’s title is Pippa, which stars Ishan Khatter as the lead.

In 2021, Ronnie Screwvala announced two feature films, Tejas and Pippa, set among the Indian Armed Forces. He was unaware that both films would prove to be costly ventures. While the Kangana Ranaut-led Tejas has turned out to be a true-blue disaster, Pippa, the second film, is taking a direct-to-digital route.

Pippa, starring Ishaan Khatter and Mrunal Thakur, will skip the theatrical release, as it has been sold to a leading digital platform for an OTT premiere, according to sources close to the development. This decision was taken due to the change in business dynamics. Also, the makers thought it was not in the best interest of the stakeholders to release Pippa on the big screen. The makers believe that non-event films on the big screen are not appealing to audiences, so the film has been sold to a digital platform despite its positive output.

Reportedly, the makers thought the lack of a big star cast would have caused significant losses during the theatrical release. That is why they have sold the film to an OTT platform and recorded a likely less loss on the project. This is the best-case scenario in terms of revenue for them, and that has happened because the content is good, according to the source.

The backdrop for Pippa is the 1971 India-Pakistan war, scheduled for release in 2024.

Directed by Raja Krishna Menon and featuring Ishaan Khatter, Mrunal Thakur, and Priyanshu Painyuli in significant roles, the film had its music scored by AR Rahman. Produced by Ronnie Screwvala & Siddharth Roy Kapur, Pippa has been certified with a U/A Rating and a runtime of 142 minutes. The film is gearing up for a Direct to OTT release soon.
