In a meeting held today (Sunday), the Tamil Film Producers Council announced a set of resolutions aimed at reviving the film industry, which is currently facing serious challenges. Rising production costs and the growing dominance of OTT platforms have put producers, distributors, and exhibitors in a tough spot.
To address these issues, the council reportedly suggested that top stars should shift from taking full remuneration to accepting a share of the film’s revenue. This move is expected to ease the financial burden on producers and encourage more sustainable budgeting.
Another major proposal was to extend the OTT streaming window. Currently, films are released on OTT platforms just four weeks after their theatrical release. The council recommends increasing this window to six to eight weeks, giving theatres more time to recover investments and attract audiences.
The council also suggested the creation of a state government-owned ticket booking platform with low service charges, which could help reduce costs for moviegoers and improve transparency in ticketing.
Additionally, the council discussed the growing competition from web series and OTT content. They emphasized that actors, directors, and top technicians should focus more on theatrical films to strengthen the industry’s core.
While these suggestions and resolutions by the Tamil Film Producers Council are promising and could benefit the industry, it remains to be seen whether they will be successfully implemented.
