The slow buzz around Jailer 2 is not limited to Tamil Version. The Telugu version of the Rajinikanth sequel is facing the same problem, and the gap with his last film Coolie is even bigger here. Despite a solo release and a massive screen count, Jailer 2’s Telugu advance bookings are not even half of what Coolie managed at the same stage.
Coolie Did It Despite a Big Clash
What makes the comparison striking is how Coolie performed. Rajinikanth’s Coolie released in August 2025 in a direct clash with War 2, which starred NTR in his Bollywood debut. Even with NTR’s film taking a big share of screens in the Telugu States, Coolie opened massively and posted bigger numbers than War 2 in Telugu.
Jailer 2 has none of that pressure. It arrives on October 15 as a solo release, with no big Telugu film on the same day. Yet at the current momentum, its advances are not even half of Coolie’s.
USA: Million-Dollar Coolie vs a Slow Jailer 2
The difference is clearest in the USA. Coolie’s Telugu version opened with stunning million-dollar premieres, one of the biggest starts ever for a dubbed film in the market.
Jailer 2’s Telugu version is nowhere close. As of Tuesday morning, its USA premiere pre-sales stood at around $86K with two days to go. At this pace, the film is not even trending towards one-third of Coolie’s start. Even Vijay Deverakonda’s Ranabaali, which itself is trending low, is growing faster and is set to overtake Jailer 2 in the Telugu USA race.
Telugu States: ₹15 Cr Looks Tough
Back home, the story is similar. Coolie opened with close to ₹20 Cr gross in the Telugu States, despite sharing screens with War 2.
Jailer 2 is releasing on a massive number of screens, but the advances suggest that even reaching ₹15 Cr gross on Day 1 will be a tough task. Telangana and Andhra Pradesh together had contributed in the range of 4 Cr in pre-sales as of Tuesday night, with occupancy below 30 percent in both states.
The trend is the same in every other territory where the Telugu version is playing.
The Jailer Price Tag
This is where the numbers become a real worry. The Telugu rights of Jailer 2 were sold based on the closing numbers of the first Jailer, which was a big blockbuster in the Telugu States. That means buyers have paid a price that assumes a similar run.
With the opening set to be well below Coolie and nowhere near record levels, Jailer 2 will now need the kind of word of mouth Jailer had to reach break-even in Telugu. The first Jailer was a slow starter that grew big on strong talk, and the sequel will have to repeat that to protect its buyers.
Everything Depends on the First Shows
The final hours of bookings may still bring some improvement, as Rajinikanth films usually see a last-minute rush. But for the Telugu version, the real test begins with the first shows on October 15. If the talk is positive, the film can still grow over the Dasara holidays. If not, the Telugu buyers are looking at a difficult run.
