The Dasara 2026 weekend is shaping up for an intriguing South Indian box-office battle, with Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 and Vijay Deverakonda’s Ranabaali arriving just a day apart. Jailer 2, the sequel to Nelson Dilipkumar’s 2023 blockbuster, is scheduled for October 15, while Ranabaali has locked October 16 for its worldwide theatrical release, according to Telangana Today. The Rajinikanth starrer has the enormous advantage of being a franchise continuation, while Vijay Deverakonda’s Ranabaali is a standalone period action drama directed by Rahul Sankrityan.

Both Stars Looking for a Comeback
Interestingly, both films arrive at a crucial stage for their respective leading men. Rajinikanth’s recent theatrical outing, Coolie, faced mixed reception despite its massive opening and star-studded scale. Vijay Deverakonda is in a similar position after Kingdom, which opened strongly but could not sustain momentum at the box office. The difference is that Jailer 2 enters the race with the franchise advantage of a proven blockbuster, while Ranabaali has to establish its own audience with a completely new world. Vijay Deverakonda does have the added attraction of reuniting with Rashmika Mandanna, marking their third film together after Geetha Govindam and Dear Comrade.

The two releases being separated by just 24 hours makes this an interesting situation for exhibitors, particularly in the Telugu states where both Rajinikanth and Vijay Deverakonda command considerable fan bases. Jailer 2 has the obvious advantage of nostalgia, franchise recognition and Rajinikanth’s superstar pull, whereas Ranabaali is banking on Vijay Deverakonda’s comeback hopes, the Vijay-Rashmika combination and Rahul Sankrityan’s period-action vision. With Dhanush’s Om also targeting October 16, the Dasara window is becoming even more crowded. The big question now is whether the makers of Jailer 2 or Ranabaali will eventually blink and move away from the clash—or whether both teams are confident enough to face each other at the box office.
