Can Jailer 2 Reach Coolie and Leo’s Opening? The Sequel Advantage Is Fading Fast

Jailer 2 arrives with huge box office expectations. Can it cross Leo's day 1 opening?

With nine days to go for its October 15 release, Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 faces a question a few expected a few months ago. Can the sequel to one of Kollywood’s biggest blockbusters even match the opening day numbers of Coolie and Leo? The trailer is out, censor formalities are done with a U/A certificate, and overseas bookings have opened. But the buzz is not where a Jailer sequel should be.

The ₹150 Cr Benchmark Lokesh Kanagaraj Built

Kollywood’s two biggest openings both belong to Lokesh Kanagaraj. Rajinikanth’s Coolie is the biggest opener in Tamil cinema history, with more than ₹150 Cr worldwide gross on Day 1. Vijay’s Leo sits right behind it, close to ₹150 Cr gross. These are the two numbers every big Tamil film is now measured against, and Jailer 2 is the first serious contender since.

On Paper, It Should Have Been Easy

Jailer worked in every territory in 2023: Tamil Nadu, Telugu States, Karnataka, Kerala and overseas. Its lifetime run made it one of the biggest Tamil films ever. Sequel to blockbusters like this usually ride on that goodwill alone and post record openings with a big margin. Add Nelson Dilip kumar, Anirudh Ravichander, Sun Pictures and Rajinikanth’s first wide IMAX release, and Jailer 2 looked set to cross Coolie without much effort.

Then the Songs and Trailer Arrived

That’s where things changed. Neither the songs nor the trailer, released on October 5, lived up to expectations. The trailer brings back Tiger Muthuvel Pandian but it hasn’t created the excitement that a Jailer sequel needed going into release week.

The result: forget beating Coolie and Leo by a big margin. Even matching their openings now looks like a big challenge.

$700K and Counting: Overseas Gives the First Clue

Overseas bookings are open, and Day 1 pre-sales stand at $700K. It’s a good start, but not a record pace. For an opening in the Coolie and Leo range, these numbers need massive jumps over the next week. The final days of booking, plus the reaction to any last-minute promotional content, will decide where Jailer 2 lands.

What Could Still Turn It Around

Rajinikanth films have a history of explosive final-week bookings, and the U/A certificate keeps family audiences in play. If Tamil Nadu and the Telugu States see a strong booking surge in the last few days, the gap can close quickly. But right now, Jailer 2 is chasing the record instead of owning it.
