Indian 2, 2.0, Sardar 2, Chandramukhi 2 and Bichagadu 2 have all failed to match their predecessors, with several of them ending up as massive box office debacles. For an industry that produces some of India’s biggest stars and directors, this sequel curse has become a genuine talking point.
This is exactly the backdrop Jailer 2 is walking into, and the expectations riding on it are record breaking. The real question now is whether director Nelson can pull this off and finally break the myth that Kollywood sequels are destined to underwhelm
The team has recently started rolling out character posters, with SJ Suryah, Vidya Balan and Suraj Venjaramoodu among those revealed so far, and each one has managed to create big buzz on its own. That kind of individual character interest is exactly the sort of groundwork that can carry a film past the usual sequel fatigue.
Jailer 2 releases on October 15, and if it delivers on the scale of anticipation surrounding it, this could be the film that finally proves a Kollywood sequel can go bigger than its original, rather than fall short of it.
