Jailer 2 Hindi Day 1: ₹3.5 Cr Nett With No Promotions and No Multiplexes, Kollywood’s Costly Hindi Mistake Again

Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 receives unexpected response from North India

Jailer 2’s Hindi version has opened with ₹3.5 Cr nett in India on its first day. The number is respectable on its own, but it comes with a big catch: the film had no Hindi promotions and was not released in national multiplex chains. With a proper release, the Hindi opening could have been many times bigger.

Single Screens Only

The Hindi version of Jailer 2 is not playing in PVR INOX or Cinepolis. These national chains follow a rule that a film must have an eight-week gap between its theatrical release and its OTT premiere. Jailer 2 signed its OTT deal with a four-week window, so the Hindi version was left out of the multiplexes and released only in single screens.

On top of that, there were no real promotions for the Hindi market. No Hindi events, no major interviews and no push to build buzz among Hindi audiences.

₹3.5 Cr Shows the Demand Is Real

Despite all of this, the Hindi version opened with ₹3.5 Cr nett on Day 1. For a dubbed film with no promotions and no multiplexes, that number clearly shows that Hindi audiences want to watch Rajinikanth on the big screen. The occupancy in single screens backs this up.

Jailer 2 also has Bollywood names in its cast, with Hrithik Roshan, Mithun Chakraborty and Vidya Balan in key roles, which could have helped the film connect with Hindi audiences even more with the right campaign.

What a Proper Release Could Have Done

The contrast with other South films this year is striking. Yash’s Toxic, a Kannada film, opened with around ₹55 Cr nett in Hindi on its first day after a full multiplex release and strong Hindi promotions. Telugu films like Pushpa 2 and Kalki 2898 AD also built huge Hindi numbers by following the eight-week window and releasing across national chains.

With positive talk now spreading, Jailer 2 could have used the Hindi market to add a big chunk to its worldwide total. Instead, a large part of that potential will be lost.

The Same Mistake, Again

This is not the first time a big Tamil film has missed the Hindi multiplexes. Kollywood producers have repeatedly chosen shorter OTT windows for their biggest films, and the Hindi versions have paid the price every time. This is one of the main reasons Tamil cinema is still unable to post big numbers in the Hindi market.

A shorter OTT window may bring a bigger digital deal, but it costs far more at the box office. Playing safe with the OTT deal is not always safe for the film.

Jailer 2 Overall

Jailer 2 is having a big run everywhere else. The film is estimated to have opened with around ₹130 Cr gross worldwide, the third biggest opening ever for a Kollywood film, and it is set for a strong run through the Dasara holidays.
