Kamal Haasan and director Shankar have officially restarted work on Indian 3, the much-delayed sequel that was put on hold after Indian 2‘s disastrous box office performance. Lyca Productions announced the restart this morning with a new poster released at 11:45 AM.
Production Resumes After Extended Hiatus
The production house had shelved Indian 3 despite completing 75% of the filming during the Indian 2 production phase. The decision came after Indian 2 emerged as a major box office disaster in mid-2024, leaving the fate of the third installment uncertain.
With significant footage already in the can, the team is now working to complete the remaining portions and release Indian 3 by Pongal 2027. This timeline gives the makers over a year to finish post-production and marketing.
High Expectations for Kamal-Shankar Comeback
During Indian 2 promotions, Kamal Haasan reportedly expressed that his favorite part of the trilogy is the third installment, not the second. This statement has raised expectations among fans that Indian 3 will deliver stronger content than its predecessor.
For director Shankar, this film represents a crucial comeback opportunity. After the critical and commercial failure of Indian 2, a successful Indian 3 could restore the filmmaker’s reputation and prove that the franchise still has potential.
Fans have responded with excitement to the restart announcement, hoping that Kamal Haasan and Shankar will meet their expectations this time and deliver the film that Indian 2 failed to be.
