Guru’s flop, Shishya’s hit

The two recent Bollywood biggies directed by South Indian directors are Sikandar, starring Salman Khan and directed by Tamil director A.R. Murugadoss, and Jaat, starring Sunny Deol and directed by Telugu director Gopichand Malineni. An interesting point here is that Murugadoss and Gopichand Malineni share a guru-shishya (mentor-disciple) relationship.

Gopichand Malineni worked as an assistant director under Murugadoss during the time of Stalin. Now, both of their films released with just a 10-day gap, resulting in a clash. In this clash, the guru Murugadoss delivered a flop, as Sikandar ended up being a huge disaster, whereas the shishya Gopichand Malineni scored a decent success with Jaat.

Jaat collected over ₹55 crore in India in its first week and is maintaining a steady run on weekdays. It is expected to reach ₹100 crore in its full run.

With Sikandar, Murugadoss received heavy criticism. Many felt that his prime was over, and his last chance for a comeback now lies with the Sivakarthikeyan film. On the other hand, Gopichand Malineni has established a decent name in Bollywood as well with Jaat. He is currently in talks with Balakrishna for his next directorial venture.
