Over the last few years, there has been a gradual shift from regional movies to Pan-Indian movies. Nowadays, almost every film gets dubbed in all languages and also releases in all 5 mainstream languages. This has led to the coinage of a new term called, Pan-Indian stars.
While Prabhas was probably the first, there were many others like Allu Arjun, Ram Charan, and Jr.NTR that followed the list. But, one that is not too often considered in this bracket and is also the most influential Pan-Indian star is Mani Ratnam.
Like director Shankar said in the trailer launch event of Ponniyin Selvan, Mani Ratnam is the real Pan-Indian star. Mani Ratnam started this trend way before anyone thought of it giving it a name. Mani made movies that crosses all language barriers. His movies like Pallavi Anu Pallavi, Bombay, Roja, Mouna Ragam, and Gitanjali transcended boundaries and were embraced by the entirety of India.
Shankar also stated how Gitanjali was his inspiration for becoming a director. Gitanjali was released as a Telugu movie but it made its way to the other Southern regions as well as to the Hindi belt.
Moreover, Mani also made several Hindi films later on and also became one of the only directors to make a movie in every single language. He made the trend, set the bar, and raised it every single time. Several movies later, Mani is finally witnessing the release of his dream project Ponniyin Selvan.
The film is releasing in theatres on 30th September. The film is studded with a star cast of Aishwarya Rai, Chiyaan Vikram, Karthi, Trisha, Sobhita Dhulipala, Jayaram, Jayam Ravi, Prakash Raj, Parthiban, Aishwarya Lakshmi, Rahman, and a bunch of others.
