Vishwak Sen’s struggles at the box office have continued with Cult. The actor-director’s bold slasher experiment has opened to a very low start, collecting only around ₹1.5 Cr gross worldwide on Day 1.
Day 1: Around ₹1.5 Cr Worldwide
- Worldwide Gross: around ₹1.5 Cr
- Worldwide Share: less than ₹1 Cr
For a Vishwak Sen film, and especially one he has written and directed himself, that’s a very disappointing opening.
A Bold Experiment That Didn’t Excite
Cult was billed as India’s first slasher thriller, with heavy violence and a dark, edgy tone. Vishwak took on the triple role of actor, writer and director, and Ravi Basrur, known for KGF and Salaar, composed the music.
But the genre didn’t create much excitement among audiences before release, and that showed in the film’s low pre-release business.
Weak Word of Mouth
To add to the problem, Cult opened to below-par reviews and word of mouth. Without strong talk to pull audiences in, the film couldn’t make up for its low buzz.
The Bold Clash That Didn’t Pay Off
While several small films moved away from October 30 to avoid Venkatesh and Trivikram’s Aadarsha Kutumbam, Cult held its ground. That decision now looks costly, though Aadarsha Kutumbam itself has opened well below expectations.
A Worrying Run for Vishwak Sen
Vishwak Sen started his career as one of the most promising young heroes in Telugu cinema, with a strong connection to youth audiences. But in recent times, he has faced a string of box office failures, and Cult continues that worrying run.
The Road Ahead
For the film to have any chance, it needs a solid jump on Day 2 and Day 3. But with such a low start and weak word of mouth, even that looks like a big task.
Practically, there’s very little chance of Cult turning into a success at the box office.
