Ever since the launch of International OTT platforms in India, people predicted a switch in theatre audiences. Even reports suggested the rapid rise in OTT subscribers year by year, but things have sped up tremendously due to COVID-19.
Due to the whole world shutting down, there was only one medium of entertainment – Digital entertainment. This is when the top streaming services like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, and Disney+Hotstar upped their game. People could watch their favorite shows and movies from the comfort of their homes, for a cheap price.
Here is the estimated data of the most subscribed OTT platforms in India:
Disney+Hotstar – Disney+Hotstar ranks at Number 1, with 4.6 crores subscriptions.
Although Disney+Hotstar offers a plethora of international series, shows, and movies, the main Unique Selling Point is Sports. It has the streaming rights for IPL, most of the Indian cricket matches, Premier League, and much more. They also offer flexible yearly and monthly plans.
Amazon Prime – Amazon Prime ranks at Number 2, with 2.17 crores subscriptions.
Amazon Prime is the largest hub for Indian content. It has been consistently delivering Hit original series and movies, Family Man, Mirzapur, Breathe, and so on. Amazon Prime is also the largest hub in terms of regional movies. Most of the regional cinema gets bought by Amazon Prime.
Netflix – Netflix ranks at Number 3, with 55 lakh subscriptions.
Netflix is an extremely successful streaming service outside India. It beats all of its competition overseas but has been struggling to establish a market in India.
One of the main reasons for this is the lack of good Indian original content. Most shows or movies have been disappointing. There is also a lack of regional content, making it the second or third choice.
That was the list of most subscribed Ott platforms in India.
