Can Sundeep Kishan Save Tollywood’s Buyers?

Sundeep Kishan's Ooru Peru bairavakona Premiers

The month of January (Sankranthi) is undoubtedly the biggest season for Telugu films worldwide. The fact that most of TFI’s industry hits have had a release coinciding with the Sankranthi festival is a testament to that.

This year’s January, too, was no different. Some of the year’s biggest films clashed at the box office, with HanuMan emerging as the highest-grosser by a big margin. While Naa Saami Ranga was also a successful venture, Saindhav crashed badly. Guntur Karam, the most anticipated of all, received mixed-to-negative reviews upon release and emerged as an above-average venture for buyers.

Barring Venkatesh’s Saindhav, this Sankranthi has been a profitable season for distributors and exhibitors. However, everything has gone downhill since then; not a single release has posted good numbers at the box office. While films such as Game On, Kismat, Yatra 2, and Boot Cut Balaraju have completely flopped, Ambajipeta Marriage Band and True Lover despite receiving favorable reviews, underperformed on weekdays. Ravi Teja’s Eagle, the biggest release this month, registered descent opening figures but has completely crashed on weekdays, leaving buyers in losses.

The Telugu-dubbed versions of Kollywood’s Captain Miller and Lal Salaam, too, faced the same fate. All eyes are on Sundeep Kishan’s fantasy thriller flick Ooru Peru Bhairavakona, which is hitting screens this Friday, February 16th. The team is super confident about the film and screening a limited premiere show this evening. The premiers got a good response and new theatres have been added. The advance bookings are excellent. Buyers hope this film works well at the box office and brings an end to the bad phase of Tollywood.
