Bhool Chuk Maaf Review — A clever idea results in a tiring comedy with some hilarious parts

Director Karan Sharma presents an intriguing concept in Bhool Chuk Maaf, but the story unfolds slowly. The initial part sets up the love story of the main characters and the setting. The real twist happens around the interval and delivers great laughs.

Bhool Chuk Maaf is a new Indian Hindi sci-fi romantic comedy movie featuring Rajkummar Rao, who recently had a big hit with Stree 2 and a flop with Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video, along with Wamiqa Gabbi. The film is written and directed by Karan Sharma.

The film was initially slated to be released in theaters on May9th, and it was scheduled for a direct OTT release on 16th May, but finally, it has been released in theaters today. Let’s check how the film has been shaped up in our review of Bhool Chuk Maaf.

Story:

Ranjan Tiwari and Titli are in love and excited about marriage. Titli’s father insists Ranjan get a government job or forget his daughter. Ranjan secures the job, only to be trapped in a loop of his haldi day. He experiences the same events daily, leaving those around him confused. The film follows Ranjan’s efforts to escape the time loop.

Performances:

Rajkummar does well and makes some fun moments work, but one cannot help but feel that he needs to snap out of his small-town characters. Wamiqa offers a fresh presence and delivers good work. Sanjay Mishra and Raghubeer Yadav perform well.

Analysis:

Director Karan Sharma presents an intriguing concept in Bhool Chuk Maaf, but the story unfolds slowly. The initial part sets up the love story of the main characters and the setting. The real twist happens around the interval and delivers great laughs.

The latter half kicks off strongly, featuring Karan’s witty lines, yet the screenplay remains uneven, slightly salvaged by Rajkummar’s humor and hitting the right note only at the climax. The film’s family theme mirrors Maddock’s previous works, such as Mimi, Luka Chuppi, and Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, featuring familiar actors. But there is a lack of chemistry among the parents and the hero’s character.

Positives:

  • Basic Story
  • Some Comedy Episodes
  • Climax Episode

Negatives:

  • Not all comedy scenes work
  • Repetitive Feel
  • Family Scenes/Characters not up to the mark

Bhool Chuk Maaf Movie Review and Verdict:

Karan Sharma’s Bhool Chuk Maaf could have been an entertaining and intriguing ride. But the continuously swinging narration diminishes its effect. Rajkumar Rao’s efforts and some comedy scenes work well for the film, and that’s it.
