Baththa on Netflix From October 29: Kollywood’s Most Loved Film of the Year Gets a Second Chance

It’s official. Vijay Sethupathi’s Baththa will start streaming on Netflix from October 29. The film will be available in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.

For a film that won hearts but didn’t get the box office numbers it deserved, the OTT release could be the moment it finally reaches a big audience.

Baththa OTT Details

  • Platform: Netflix
  • Streaming From: October 29
  • Languages: Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam

Loved by Everyone

Baththa released in theatres on October 1 and opened to unanimous positive response. Critics and audiences praised it widely, and many called it the best Tamil film of the year.

Set in the Madras of the mid-1980s, the film blends gangster comedy with emotional drama. Vijay Sethupathi’s performance, the period setting and the heartfelt story all won praise.

But the Box Office Didn’t Follow

Somehow, the strong word of mouth never turned into big numbers at the box office. Baththa collected less than ₹40 Cr gross worldwide in its theatrical run, far below what its reviews suggested it could do.

It’s one of those films that audiences loved, but not enough of them went to theatres to see it.

A Second Chance on Netflix

Now, with Netflix’s reach across India and the world, Baththa gets a real second chance. The release in five languages means audiences who missed it in theatres, especially outside Tamil Nadu, can finally discover it.

Many films that underperformed in theatres have found huge love on OTT, and Baththa has every chance of becoming one of them.

A Special Reunion

Baththa marks the third collaboration between Vijay Sethupathi and director Balaji Tharaneetharan. The duo earlier worked together on the cult comedy Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom and Seethakaathi.

The film is presented by Atlee, who has even spoken about his dream of taking Baththa to the Oscars. It’s produced by Murad Khetani, Priya Atlee, Alok Jain and Ajit Andhare under Cine1 Studios and A For Apple Studios, with Star Studio18 presenting. Sai Abhyankkar composed the music.
