Atlee is one of the most successful directors in the current generation who can blend action and romance in making a huge budgeted entertainers. Movies like Mersal, Bigil are few examples. His latest movie Jawaan with Superstar Sharukh Khan is the most awaited Bollywood movie with a potential to turnout to be a blockbuster in South as well.
However the allegations of plagiarism clouding this project called Jawaan. Producer of a 2006 tamil movie called Perarasu, Manickam Narayanan approached Tamil Film Producers council that Jawaan is a copy of his movie.
The Council has entertained this complaint and investigating on the issue. However this is not the first time Atlee has faced these kind of allegations and blames. He is often trolled for copying Maniratnam.
According to the critics all his movies so far have considerable similarity with yesteryear classics. Rajarani is compared to Mounaragam, Bigil is inspired heavily from Chak de, if not copied. This touchy track record of the director brings an element of suspicion in the allegation made by the producer.
These kind of controversies aren’t new to Kollywood, previously a Vijay-Murugadoss movie named Sarkar got lot of backlash from a writer that his story was robbed, even the writer’s council ruled that there were significant similarities.
Later Sarkar was released with the mention of the writer’s name. But we can not conclude and take sides based on producer’s version itself. Producer claims that in Perarasu Vijayakanth did a dual role and it is the case with jawan as well.
However Jawaan team is yet to clarify about this double action claim. It is also worrying that the big scale movies had to go through these controversies. Parallel thoughts and similar ideas are common but directors relying on formulaic blockbusters have to scout for fresh ideas to avoid these blames.
