Ashta Chamma: A feel good stress relieving entertainer

Starring: Nani, ‘Colours’ Swathi Reddy, Srinivas Avasarala, Bhargavi, Jhansi, Tanikella Bharani, Hema

Direction: Mohan Krishna Indraganti

Release Date: Sept 5, 2008

Story: Lavanya (Swathi Reddy) is a hardcore fan of Mahesh Babu and is hell bent on marrying him. After a lot of pressure from her aunt Mandira Devi (Jhansi) and since Mahesh Babu is already married, Lavanya agrees to marry someone whose name is Mahesh and as good looking as him. Lavanya’s neighbour Anand (Srinivas Avasarala) agrees to help her find the guy so that he can avoid disturbance caused by Lavanya playing Mahesh Babu songs on full volume all the time. Anand comes across a cool modern guy named Mahesh (Nani) and introduces him to Lavanya and they both fall in love instantly. Just then, a twist in the tale occurs. What confusions and complications did this lead to forms the rest of the story.

Performances: This film introduced both Natural Star Nani and talented actor and director Srinivas Avasarala to Tollywood and both have pulled off excellent performances and nowhere do they seem like debutants. Nani is so apt for this role and wins us over and makes us root for him with his innocent and adorable performance. He is lucky to have got a good first film like this to showcase the ease with which he can perform and evoke comedy. Same applies to Srinivas Avasarala. On the other hand, Colours Swathi having done a few films before this made a strong impact and got noticed with this one. She is extremely cute and bubbly in this film and stands as one of the main reasons to watch this film multiple times. The other artists like Bhargavi (who is no more), Tanikella Bharani, Jhansi and Hema too have done their parts well and added to the fun.

Technicalities: PG Vinda’s visuals added life to this film. There is a modern vibe to the city portions and a slightly natural and pleasant tone to the village portions. Songs have been picturised beautifully too. Kalyani Malik’s music and background score are a major booster for this film. All songs are pleasant and suit the mood and situation in the film. Some of the songs sound good even today, 12 years later. Mohan Krishna Indraganti’s dialogues deserve a special mention. There is a non-stop flow of conversations in the film and the quality in the dialogues has ensured that the conversations are always engaging and entertaining and never boring.

Screenplay-Direction: The story of the film itself is very fresh and has lot of scope for good humour. Good casting and writing was what was required to make this film come out well and Mohan Krishna has done both correctly. Casting inexperienced yet talented actors and writing an engaging screenplay has helped this film click well. There are only a bunch of important characters in the film and the story revolves only around them. Simple, situational and healthy comedy along with breezy romance and songs made this film more special and created good repeat value. The feel good climax with a twist is also a major plus for this film. This film marked a bright start for Nani in Tollywood and helped him achieve great heights in the future. This is definitely one of those films which can act as a major stress reliever and bring a smile on our faces. Mohan Krishna Indraganti became popular for his feel good rom coms which started with this film.

Response: The film was a box office success and certain dialogues and references in this film became popular in daily use among public. Swathi Reddy bagged both the Filmfare award and Nandi Award for her performance in this film.

Bottomline: If you are bored and still haven’t watched this film, happily go ahead and give this one a try. It is worth your time.
