Akhil Akkineni Finally a Star After 10 Years

Nagarjuna was involved full-time to select his son's next project and finalized Vinaro Bhagyam Vishnu Katha director Murali Krishna, and the film will be produced by Nag. However, the team did not make any official announcement on the film, and even the shooting is also said to have started a long time ago. To play CCL, Akhil reportedly took a break from the shoot and returned to the sets again in Hyderabad. The Akkineni fans will indeed get surprised by the fact that Akhil’s next big project silently started its shooting.

Akhil Akkineni, grandson of legendary actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao and son of Nagarjuna, made one of Telugu cinema’s most anticipated debuts with Akhil in 2015. Directed by V. V. Vinayak and produced by Nithiin, the film released on November 11, 2015, amid massive expectations given his illustrious family legacy. Despite the hype, the film failed to impress at the box office. A decade later, after multiple setbacks and years of uncertainty, the actor appears to have finally found the breakthrough that had long eluded him.

The Weight of Legacy and Early Struggles

Being the grandson of the legendary ANR and son of one of Telugu cinema’s biggest stars came with immense pressure. While his debut Akhil earned him the Filmfare Best Male Debut award, the commercial failure set the tone for what would become a challenging journey. Unlike his contemporaries who found their footing within a couple of films, Akhil Akkineni struggled to translate his family’s star power into box-office success.

A Decade of Missed Opportunities

His second film, Hello (2017), directed by Vikram Kumar, earned positive reviews and praise for Akhil’s performance but turned out to be a below-average grosser at the box office. Mr. Majnu (2019) followed a similar path, with its music and romantic appeal failing to bring audiences to theatres. Most Eligible Bachelor (2021) eventually emerged as a box-office hit and gave him his first commercial success, though much of the credit went to producer Allu Aravind’s backing, Gopi Sundar’s music, co-star Pooja Hegde’s star power, and its family-friendly storytelling.

The ‘Agent’ Disaster and Three-Year Hiatus

Fans expected Most Eligible Bachelor to change Akhil Akkineni‘s fortunes, but Agent) proved to be a crushing setback instead. The Surender Reddy directorial, made on a budget of ₹80 crores, released on April 28, 2023, to highly negative reviews from critics and audiences alike. The film was thrown out of several theatres within just three days of release, becoming one of the biggest flops in recent Telugu cinema. The failure was so severe that both producer Anil Sunkara and Akhil publicly apologized, acknowledging that production had commenced without a properly bound script. The debacle forced the actor into a three-year hiatus from theatrical releases.

‘Lenin’ Brings the Long-Awaited Breakthrough

Akhil Akkineni has now returned with Murali Kishor Abburu’s Lenin, which released on July 10, 2026. The film opened to positive word of mouth and posted encouraging numbers over its first two days. With Sunday bookings also looking promising, the film could finally establish him as the bankable star fans had been waiting to see for the last ten years. Whether Lenin can sustain its momentum and deliver the career-defining success Akhil desperately needs remains to be seen, but early signs suggest the actor may have finally found his footing in an industry where his family name alone couldn’t guarantee success.
