After almost a couple of years of going on floors, Akhil Akkineni’s Agent has finally hit the screens today. The entire unit and Akkineni fans have set high expectations on this one and the movie has been shot on a lavish scale. Can Akhil stand on his word and deliver a big hit? will this movie emerge as a turning point in his career? Let’s find out.

Story: Ricky (Akhil) is very passionate and a wild spirit who wants to be a raw agent from childhood due to an incident. Mahadev (Mammootty) scouts and takes Ricky under his wing and handpick him to get the best of a rogue ex-agent Devil (Dino Morea). A straightforward mission goes haywire and Ricky is now the target. How Ricky solves this problem and how he serves his nation is what the story is all about.

Analysis: Agent has a very interesting plot line and Akhil’s characterization has been designed in an interesting manner full of energy. Akhil’s character does unpredictable things in a very stylish way but the Surender Reddy failed to engage the audience with the right screenplay and failed to connect the audience to the mission. A spy thriller requires twists and turns and a strong villain which all are lacking in Agent. Everything right from the first frame has been created in an extremely predictable manner with some scenes being outright illogical. The songs and BGM are the biggest minuses of the film and so is the love track which tests the audience’s patience. Production values also do not look good for a movie of such budget and grand scale. Akhil has certainly performed well and barring him and legendary Mammotty, every other aspect of the movie failed in a very big way. Sakshi Vaidya’s role does not create any impact on the film even if it turns very boring track in the film.

Plus Points:

  • Akhil and Mammootty’s performance
  • Pre-interval and interval bit

Minus Points:

  • Screenplay and direction
  • Music and BGM
  • Entire 2nd half
  • Weak villain characterization
  • Poor visuals

Verdict

The pan-India trend has seriously backfired for Agent with the movie failing to draw the audiences towards its core cause. The movie would have definitely helped the makers had the effort put into foreign locations and over-the-top action sequence been used for creating an engaging plot with better characterization
