Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker Reunite for Lalkaar

Aamir Khan and director Ashutosh Gowariker are reuniting after 25 years for a new cricket film titled Lalkaar, bringing back the iconic combination that delivered the Oscar-nominated classic Lagaan in 2001. The announcement has sparked excitement among fans who have been waiting for this legendary duo to collaborate again.

The Lalkaar Project

Lalkaar is a biographical sports drama based on the life of legendary Indian cricketer Lala Amarnath. Set against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition, the film focuses on the historic 1952 India-Pakistan Test series that Amarnath captained—a defining moment in cricket history marked by rivalry, national pride, and sporting excellence.

Farhan Akhtar has joined the cast in a pivotal role, reportedly playing a close companion and fellow cricketer. According to industry sources, the screenplay is being penned by the acclaimed duo Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi (known for 3 Idiots, PK, and Sanju), with production handled by Excel Entertainment. The film is scheduled to go on floors in October 2026.

Why This Reunion Matters

The Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker partnership has been one of Bollywood’s most successful collaborations. Lagaan (2001) not only earned an Academy Award nomination but also became a cultural phenomenon that redefined Indian sports cinema. The film’s 25th anniversary earlier this year saw both reminiscing about the creative process, including lighthearted debates about character choices like why drought-affected Bhuvan should not appear clean-shaven.

For Aamir Khan, who has faced recent box office challenges, Lalkaar represents a strategic return to the biographical sports drama genre where he has historically excelled. Meanwhile, Gowariker‘s last theatrical directorial release was the 2019 historical action drama Panipat.

The combination of cricket, partition-era storytelling, and the proven Aamir KhanAshutosh Gowariker chemistry positions Lalkaar as one of the most anticipated Bollywood projects in the pipeline.
