Rangasthalam was one of the landmark films in Tollywood that gave a path for several young directors in terms of presenting a rural backdrop with conviction. The 1980’s backdrop of the film helped it immensely and it was also the need of the subject. Sukumar used the same backdrop for Pushpa as well where the film was set in the 1990’s backdrop.
Along with Rangasthalam and Pushpa, another recent blockbuster film that was set a few decades ago was Prashantha Neel’s KGF. It emerged as an all-time blockbuster and took us back to the age of retro. Now, other Tollywood biggies are following this trend and are trying to capture the essence of the 80s and 90s in their films. Koratala Siva’s Devara is also said to be a 1980s backdrop film, and Pawan Kalyan’s OG is also said to be in 1980’s timeframe.
Similarly, Ram Charan and Buchi Babu’s film will also be set in the 1980’s. This trend has caught up with senior heroes as well. Balakrishna- Bobby’s next collaboration will have a 1980’s backdrop. Varun Tej’s Matka will take us a few more decades back and will capture the essence of the 1960s – 1980 backdrop. In Tollywood, the 1980s backdrop has become the latest trend, and big and small heroes, all are interested in it.
